Wilfred Laurier Rail Jam

Ryan from Sanction Skate and Snow called us up to see if we wanted to come hang out at Wilfred Laurier University for an over the top no holds barred winner take all rail jam.....actually it was just a mellow comp on the portable Horseshoe Set up. Beav, Connor, Cam Veenstra and Ben Poechman showed up to get their awesome on. Here's Connor live, but really two days later from the event:

"The Day was freezing cold, and the set up everyone already knows all too well and it was held in a random parking lot where I'm assuming a bunch of people could not find it.

Cam actually did almost every trick possible on the horseshoe mobile set up and stomped them as clean as can be. Somehow due to a (insert random judging comment here, positive or negative its really up to you and your demeanor) Cam came third still winning lots of loot.

But the highlight of the day was when Cam found 20 dollars on the ground and took me and Beav for some Tim Hortons. Fun had by all who braved the cold and by those that braved the cold I mean the roving packs of university kids anti-freezing themselves with fun sodas"

Totally FKN Awesome

When was the last time you saw a snowboard graphic and were able to say "no way that's me"? Past World and Canadian Windsurfing champ Jeff Borgmeyer walked into my showroom yesterday, saw next years Totally FKN Awesome and did just that. After a few stories about competitive windsurfing and olympic qualification in the 80's I get the feeling it was a lot like having FIS regulate current snowboard qualification. Anyhow, Jeff was stoked and left saying "wow the 80's, those were good times". More like Totally FKN Awesome times. Man I love my job.

Am I hating on World Snowboarding Day? No, not at all. But as stated above snowboarding shouldn't and isn't relegated to one day. Its something most of us try and do every chance we get and most have ditched work, school, people or whatever to go riding. There's just something about snowboarding. Best case scenario, the press and promo around World Snowboarding day reaches someone that never even thought about going snowboarding and they become as infected as you and I. Worst case scenario, it gives you an excuse to ditch work, school, people or whatever to get on snow.

Our friends at Horseshoe were holding some festivities so the choice of where to go was pretty easy. And since it was world snowboarding day and not world stand in tents day, everyone ended up riding, so half- hearted apologies to anyone who dropped by the empty tent. All photos by Connor Dudgeon.

Connor and friends journeyed up to North Bay for pre-season rail jam, here's the details.

" The journey began meeting up with riders Kirby Kostuk and Brad Gauley, our goal was to reach North Bay and essentially devour everything in true Capita fashion. The drive was made easy by the fact that Ontario has no trace of snow on the ground or in the forecast… so that was nice, but shitty at the same time. After a quick little scare of running out of gas, we made it to the contest eager to stretch our legs and ride. With the crisp November air and the generator powering up to light the 20 foot down box, things were ready to get started. Being the annual North Bay Christmas walk, there were about 10,000 people on the downtown strip and a large amount of them watching the contest. There were two heats of riders and 3 snowboarders and 2 skiers made it through to the finals out of those heats. Riders were getting used to the box at the beginning but near the end better and better tricks were being landed. Brad landed a couple perfectly smooth front blunt same way 270s, Kirby had a solid 5050 front 3 out and a wild stalefish to 5050. Unfortunately I wasn't successful at swaying the other 2 judges minds into putting Brad and Kirby through but everyone still had a good time on this particular Friday night in North Bay, Ontario. We came, we saw and we devoured! Fun as always with good people. Thanks goes out to Cheapskates snowboard shop for putting on a great contest which is only getting better every year, and of course Captia, Union and Coal."

Not a bad turnout for a pre-seaon rail jam!!! Barry and crew at Cheapskates have also been running another comp, Snow Wars for over 20 years, making it the longest running contest in Ontario. No small feat, considering some shops don't last this long, let alone a contest. So save the date - Feb 4 at Laurentian in North Bay and be part of history.

On my way to see he future at Holden meetings in Portland, but what's even better than seeing the future is getting on snow. I extended my layover in Vancouver, hooked up with my buddy Lukacs and hit up Cypress. No epic pow though. Lots of snow but rain yesterday and a low freezing level created some epic hardpack. Better than not riding though. Thanks to t loaf for hooking up the board.

Couple shots and thoughts from Connor Dudgeon:
Saturday marked the 1st annual Movember Rain Rail contest at Horseshoe resort. We were greeted with sunny skies and a big group of riders ready to get their season started with a little rail action. There was music to get you pumped, a bonfire fire to warm you up, basketball net to get you balling and snowboarding in mid November, what more could one ask for? Recent addition to the mhg crew, Cameron Veenstra was representing Captia and Union in the Am portion and made it to the finals. Some serious tricks were going down by the end of the day after everyone got used to the speed and rails. In the end Leanna King 1st place in the Women's Snowboard category. In the Men's Am snowboard Malcolm Eppinger took it and in the Men's Pro category Max Eberhart won the whole deal. Post contest, things got serious. A full on moustache contest was held to figure out which was the most crowd approved upper lip. Overall great day, and a good start to the season, well kind of. Shouldn't be long now before the hills start to open. Thanks to Horseshoe resort and everybody that came out to support."

Your Complete Schedule for the Toronto Ski and Snowboard Show

Since most of us are going to be in a bit of a turkey coma for the next couple of days I figured an insiders guide to the Toronto Ski, Snowboard and Travel Show is in order.

Thursday - Oct 13
Show opens at 3 pm. If you're looking for last years product this is the best time to show up. And no I'm not talking about those brands where you can find three hundred pairs of size small, horrible colourway they didn't sell anyway bindings or two hundred 165 cm worst plank ever no name boards. I'm talking about the stuff you want. This stuff gets scooped up right quick. So if your looking for that hard to find last years board, bindings, outerwear or goggles this is your time. Or if your looking for new product from those brands who sell out before the snow even flies then this is your time.

* If you're working at a shop during the show then you've already been at the show for a minimum of one day and are feeling pretty good. Bummer you're going to miss Art of Flight since it starts at 8 but your working till 9. But thanks to your friends at Capita, Monster and Dialogue you can still go get awesome once the show's done. And since the show doesn't start till noon on Friday, lots of time to hydrate and get back on your game.

This one is going to be epic. A fully monster'ed bar, most of the Canadians from the CAPiTA team, the Neck of the Woods flick, Defenders of Awesome and more prizing than you know what to do with. Info here

Fri. Oct 14
Show opens at 12 and goes till 10 pm. Good day to hang out, take in all the new product and see all the pros that are in town. Plus signings all day at the Snowboard Canada booth. Best bet is to show up at 3 for a few hours, leave at 7 or so for some food/pre-drinks before you go out.

* Shop guys and girls, this is day 2. You were probably feeling pretty rough when the show opened, but after a day standing, talking about snowboards and of course snowboard related accessories, your feet are a little sore but you've been convinced to go out to the 20th Anniversary Snowboard Canada Party. The Sandbox Flick Day and Age is premiering, Alterna's 13 O'clock, and some little company from Vermont is playing their promo vid.

The show opens at 10 and your probably not going to believe how fast the parking lot filled up and that you're parked in Scarborough. Good day to come to the show, as there are a tonne of autograph sessions and more pros around than a Whistler patio in spring. Plus there's probably a TFC game, craft show, bike swap and patchouli convention all happening within 5 minutes of the Snow Show. Time your departure accordingly. Showing up at 7 is probably the best strategy for some serious gear getting as there's less crowds and its easier to find things.

* Shop guys and girls, you showed up feeling like a bag of hammers today. No delicate way to put it. Your feet are killing you from the concrete floors at the show and at the bars, your sweat is 6% alcohol and you can't eat another slice of pizza if your life depended on it. Wanna ease the pain? Pre-planning my friends, pre-planning. Designate 4 pairs of shoes for the show, one for each day, plus a sock change and freshening up your kit prior to the premieres is key. Drink at least 3 of those giant lemonades per day. Yup they are over-priced but well worth every penny. Final note, Advil liquid gels help the aches and pains be it from work or apres work activities. Trust me you'll be more than ready to out on Saturday if you followed these steps, plus what the hell its the last night, time to send it. Go here for details.

The show opens at 10, but trust me you won't be there right at 10. There's some stupid marathon raising money for some "insert any worthwhile cause here" and of course it makes sense to shut down part of Canada's largest city. Not like there's any greenspace or city trails where you could actually host this. Can you tell I've been stuck in this before. Anyhow, final day at the show and final day to take advantage of some deals.

* Shop Guys and Girls, take solace in the fact that today is the last day. Share your battle stories with shop staff from other stores. You now have a common bond, you've survived the ski and snowboard show, the work and the party. Today is your last day of bartering over prices. And comment if I'm wrong but since its okay to haggle over the price of last years goggles or boots for that matter, why isn't it okay to haggle over everything? Give it a try. Go to the beer store, see if the guy at the cash will give you a couple of bucks off that two four. Try it at the gas station. Sure $1.29 is a reasonable price for gas but what about cutting a guy a break say $1.10 and you'll buy some windshield washer fluid. Don't know what I'm talking about? Work the show, then read this.

I watched this:

and realized its been almost 25 years since I met Den in high school. It would have been hard not too. If you were from Pickering and had a snowboard or skateboard you might not have known him personally, but you definitely knew of him. He was definitely an influence and the measuring stick for us as kids, so much so that some were even mockingly labelled baby Den. You know who you are. Everyone who's met him has a story and I'm no different so here's a few of thousands.

This is the cover of my second or third TWS. Probably chock full of Yuki Nemaki and Quimbola Man stuff. No big deal, but I probably searched every convenience store and grocery store magazine rack to find it prior to memorizing it cover to cover. Somehow it came into Den's possession, was cut up and plastered over the walls in his room. I was pissed and starting asking him where my magazine was on a daily basis. Till one day I was walking down the hall at school and out of nowhere a size monster Doc Martin planted itself on my chest and knocked my ass to the ground. I quit asking him about the mag after for over a decade, but started again when I was his TM for a few years.

The first real snowboard movie I ever saw (Kemper cold wave doesn't count) was Snowboarders in Exile. Everything about it blew my mind! Standout's were Chris Roach's word's of wisdom, All and Big Drill Car. After preaching about skateboard influenced snowboarding all summer, Critical Condition (the follow up to Exile) showed up at my house in October of 1991. Dennis and another buddy were leaving the next day for Lake Louise and stopped by my house when the shrink wrap came off and we witnessed Roach(bummer about the fatal femoral artery)and Ranquet's (cab the Blackcomb QP!) parts and the flying rubber frog incident in Japan with Palmer. It wasn't really that big a deal but for some reason its always stood out. Maybe its because both the FLF flicks and Bannock played such a role in progressing snowboarding. Or maybe I was (and still am) just a dumb kid.

Leashes have always been stupid. Period. Most places have quit asking if you have one, but it used to be a reason for patroller's and hick lifties to hassle you. Maybe we provoked it because we used to just attach both ends to our bindings or just tied a shoe lace around our bindings and made the whole concept pointless. Stupid things. The biggest mockery was when Dennis was back from the Lake in the spring of 92 or 93 and showed up at Lakeridge with a leash made up of 2 inch chain links. Spring Migration

The spring migration has begun and I'm not talking about birds returning from Florida. Since riding in Ontario is done for the season, its the perfect time for those with the means (or charm for securing a couch)to take advantage of cheap spring passes and head to Whis till the cash runs out. Bradley Hesson's there right now, and so is Zach Moorcroft along with a bunch of others. What are you waiting for? Go.

Mikey called me Friday morning talking about Jamie Lynn's method and thinking about a pow mission to Cape Smokey, Cape Breton. That's all it took and by Saturday the text messages started...here's the run down courtesy of Mikey.

Ski Cape Smokey in Cape Breton Highlands National Park. By far the best ski area in NS. Closed by the NS government a few years ago, but volunteers have decided to open it this year on weekends. $10 lift tickets. Only a 4.5 hour drive from Halifax.Made a last minute call on Friday to drive up on Saturday morning as they had received 2.5 feet of snow this past week.

With only the Poma lift going 500vert feet you could hike the remaining 500vertical and ride the entire mountain. Each run was untracked top to bottom as most people opted to just ride the Poma accessed runs.

You can ride powder anywhere if you commit to it.

Top Of the World Step Down at Mont Cascade

Last year, this stop was one of the best on the demo/contest circuit. People were so hyped to try out new gear that rain, snow, hail, sun repeat all day long didn't stop em. Lift lines all day long. This year was the same, but with a bigger crew made up of Brad Gauley, Andrew Skelhorn, Matt Bujok, Bradley Hesson, Kirby Kostuk and photo guy Connor Dudgeon. I did some follow cam laps on Saturday with the camera off, so you'll have to settle for some contest footy. Thanks to Eric at Top and Mike at Cascade for makin this fun. It's sales meeting season again. And the highlight of the season is always the C3 meetings. Blue and CAPiTA always blow minds and Union, well if you've strapped into a pair you know. Enough with the nut swinging though. Rome and Paris were great, but this year it's Chamonix!! And it seems like everyone's having trouble getting there..............because of the snow. So the 10 hours in the Frankfurt airports well worth it. Especially with highlights like this:
